1a. This poem comesfrom Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five. Montana Wildhack wore a necklace andmedallion around her neck with this inscription. It is illustrated rathercrudely with a drawing of the medallion hanging between her obviously ratherlarge breasts. This quote is the type of "in", meaningful poetry of thelate sixties. It seems like a somewhat insincere poem between the breastsof a former porn star. I think Vonnegut uses this as an example of hisview of religion. One of the main themes of the book is the hypocrisy surroundingreligion. It seems a little ridiculous that Montana would carry such apoem.
Pretty general. Forgets a) that she wears it because of her aloholic mother
No comparison to anotherwork
Also left out theconnection to Tralfalmadorian ideas about how nothing can be changed
They missed the firstappearance where it was hanging in billy's office
They mean the themeof religion, but really don't say much about it.
I gave this a 6.5or a seven
1b. Kurt Vonnegut,Slaughterhouse Five This quotation comes from the message the Trafamadorianshave read while on earth. Or it is one of the plaques that Billy Pilgrimowns -- I get confused. The tralfamadorians do not go along with this philosophyfully. Their theory is that life is fate. Individuals have no control overwhat occurs. This theme is representative of what Billy Pilgrim’s lifeis not like. Billy is incapable of distinguishing what he can and cannotchange. Also it shows how Billy Pilgrim is too passive to even try to changesome portion of his life if he was aware of it. This quote ties in withdifferent attitudes people have toward changing life, or even with justliving with it. Such as earlier stated, the Tralfamadorians living by fate.
No mention of other works.
Doesn't bring up issue of free will
Doesn't place it in the book at all.
But does have more of a grasp of theme issuesthan first one.
Still, this couldn't get more than abouta 7.
1c. Kurt Vonnegut isthe author and Slaughterhouse Five is the title. This quote in contextwith the plot is that Billy cannot change anything. Billy repeats thisquote because he has no courage to change anything. This quote is likeBrick in Cat because his drinking keeps things the way they are insteadof fighting to change them. The same with Miss Amelia in Ballad of theSad Cafe. She has no desire to change her look on life except for CousinLymon, but he leaves her so she changes right back the way she was, boardedup inside the cafe.
Good comparisons, butmisses out on SH5
Needs to elaboratemore on theme in SH5.
