BRIEF HISTORY OF THE KNICKERBOCKER

The Knickerbocker One Designs (KOD) were build in the early 1960's by the American Boatbuilding Corp. in Warwick, Rhode Island. It was designed by Sparkman and Stephens Inc. (Design No. 1621) for the Knickerbocker Yacht Club on Long Island.

We know that at least 20 were built and maybe 22. Current owners at Keowee:

  • Hull #6 Solitaire: Keith Grewe
  • Hull #18 Jambalaya: Phil Flower
  • Hull #20 Bacchante: Doug French
On May 1, 1999, Sam Secrest officially formed the Knickerbocker Fleet at the Keowee Sailing Club ... three boats making a fleet.

Skippers from left to right are Keith Grewe, Doug French, and Phil Flower.
