Dan Simmons
Carrion Comfort
The introduction of vampires into a modern-day timeline links our world to that
of a fantasy world in which magic rules the day. The assumption that any type of
'undead' creature could exist is the stuff of horror stories. Simmons uses this
in his Carrion Comfort to bring our world into that of a fantastic time of
vampires and other creatures of the night. The "carrion eaters"
are essentially mutants who can control other humans through direct psychic access
to their hind-brains.
