The Left Hand of Darkness
The two worlds in The Left Hand of Darkness are the world
of galactic travel of the Eukmen, and the Ice world of
the planet Winter. On planet Winter, there are certain
technological advances, yet they are archaic in comparison
to the world spanning spaceships of the Eukmen. Genly
Ai, the envoy from the Eukmen, is thrust into this
bizzarre world of androgynous beings in the hopes that
an alliance with this world will prevail. The differences
in politics in the two cultures keeps Genly Ai, an envoy
from his federation of planets, and Estraven, a high
ranking government official, from being able to communicate
effectively with one another.
