Samuel Ray Delany

The Fall of the Towers Trilogy

Delany's work tends to follow similiar recurring themes. The plot structure is usually that of a quest or fantastic voyage, and physically or psychologically damaged participants are common. Mythology is a recurring area of interest, usually taking the form of metaphorical allusion to existing myths or of an investigation of the way new myths are formed. The Fall of the Towers is full of cultural speculations that take place in a story of war, mutations, mad computers and a malign cosmic intelligence. The original three volumes were set in the same post-holocaust Earth as Delany's 1962 novel The Jewels of Aptor.
