Madeleine L'Engle

The Time Quintet Series

The blending of SF and Fantasy is also found in series generally written-off as "juvenile literature" in libraries. Madeleine L'Engle's Time Quintet series, which begins with the widely read A Wrinkle In Time, also fits the SF/Fantasy interchange mode. The series centers around the children of the Murry family, whose parents are scientists involved with research in space and time travel. The first novel introduces Meg who serves as the POV for most of the series in which she and her brother Charles Wallace are transported into another dimension and are able to travel through time. This "other" dimension, however, is populated with various good and evil spirit creatures that can assume various forms. Several of these creatures are unicorns with other special powers. The series is approached from aprimarily SF standpoint with a quasi-logical explanation for the methods in which the children are able to travel through time and dimensions. The fantasy element is very strong, however, in the other worlds and magical creatures that the children encounter. Charles Wallace's heroic quest also resembles a fantasy model more than a SF one.
