Piers Anthony's
Blue Adept Series
Phaze and Proton are the same
planet--sort of. Proton, the planet we are introduced to first, is a
science fiction world in which people are either enormously rich citizens
or naked and poor indentured servants. But on Proton there is the Game,
which is a set up by which everyone on Proton has equal access to any game
ever created, so they may compete. And every year one person wins
citizenship for himself. Why is Proton so rich? Because it is the only
source in the galaxy of Protonite, the most compact, clean, and efficient
fuel known to man. But, through the "curtain," Proton is also Phaze, a
land of magic, where special magical talents are fueled by the presence
of Phazite, the equivalent of Protonite in the other frame. There is a
tenuous balance between the two worlds, eroding every year with the
mining of Protonite. The adventures erupt when a slave named Stile from
Proton accidentally crosses frames, and must save the two worlds, whether
or not they want to be saved.

Piers Anthony also has two other series worth
investigation as part of the juxtaposition of science
fiction and fantasy. One is the Xanth series,
which puts magical Xanth in juxtaposition with the
world of "Mundania," also known as the Florida Pennisula.
The other is the Incarnations of Immortality series,
which begins with the book On a Pale Horse, where a
normal guy accidentally kills Death, and has to take his
place.
